Troncs Overview
A tronc is a way to share pooled tips between employees. Troncs are available for UK accounts.
To access Tronc:
Navigate to Time & Attendance > Compliance > Troncs
You can:
create troncs for one or more teams
enter the tips received each day
give employees tronc points, to decide how tips are shared
settle each week’s tronc, which adds the tips to employees’ timesheets
Create a Tronc
To create a new tronc:
Go to Time & Attendance > Compliance > Troncs.
Click New tronc.
Fill in the details:
Name: a name to help you identify the tronc, for example “Front of House Tips”.
Departments: the teams the tronc is shared between. A team can only be in one tronc.
Troncmaster: the person who enters the tips and settles the tronc. It can be any active employee.
Pay Group: sets the day each weekly tronc period starts. Choose the pay group your staff are paid on.
Sharing Strategy: Daily shares each day’s tips between the people who worked that day. Weekly shares the week’s tips between everyone who worked that week.
Save the tronc.
When you create a tronc:
Active employees in the selected teams are added with 1 tronc point each.
The current week’s tronc period is created.
An allowance with the same name as the tronc is created. You don’t need to apply it yourself. Tips are added to timesheets when you settle the tronc.
How tips are shared
Each person’s share is based on the hours they worked × their tronc points.
For example, if Alex worked 10 hours with 2 points (20) and Sam worked 20 hours with 1 point (20), they get the same share.
Only approved shifts worked in the tronc’s teams count, and the person must also be a member of one of those teams. Leave doesn’t count. A shift in a team outside the tronc doesn’t count, even if it’s the person’s main team.
Enter tips for a tronc period
Each tronc period is one week.
Go to Time & Attendance > Compliance > Troncs and click View on the tronc.
Choose the week under Start date.
If there’s no period for that week yet, click New tronc period, then confirm.
Enter the tips received for each day of the week, then click Save Changes. If your tronc is set to Weekly, the days are added together.
The breakdown shows each person’s hours worked, tronc points and tronc assignment.
Only the troncmaster can enter or change the amounts.
Assign Tronc Points
Tronc points decide how tips are shared.
Go to Time & Attendance > Compliance > Troncs, then Assign Tronc Points.
Use the Troncs and Teams filters to find people.
Enter points for each person, or enter a number in Tronc points and click Assign all to give everyone in the list the same points.
Points must be whole numbers. Give someone 0 points if they shouldn’t get tips, for example if they’ve opted out.
Settle a Tronc Period
Settling adds each person’s tips to their timesheet.
Open the tronc and choose the week.
Click Settle tronc.
Click Validate period to check the period. You may see:
Timesheets exported: someone’s timesheets for this period have already been exported.
Unusual tronc data: a day has no tips entered.
New employees: people who joined since the last settle. They’re added with 1 point.
Unassigned tronc points: people on 0 points.
If there’s nothing to check, you’ll see Looking good.
Click Settle tronc.
These are warnings, so you can still settle. But you can’t settle if a timesheet with a shift in the period has been exported. Unlock it first.
When the tronc is settled:
For a Weekly tronc, each person’s tips are added as one allowance on their last shift of the week. For a Daily tronc, each day’s tips are added as an allowance on their last shift that day.
The period shows as Settled, and the amounts can’t be changed.
The next week’s period is created.
Only the troncmaster can settle a tronc.
Note: The timesheet warning will only appear if timesheets that overlap the tronc period are exported for any users
Change a settled period
Open the tronc and choose the week.
Click Unsettle Tronc, then Unsettle. This removes the tips from timesheets and reopens the period.
Make your changes, then settle again.
You can’t unsettle if any of the timesheets have been exported. Unlock them first.
If timesheets change after you’ve settled, the tronc shows Timesheets have changed since this tronc was settled, and the timesheet may show Tips settled from the tronc no longer match this timesheet. Unsettle and settle again to update the tips.
Edit a tronc
On the Troncs list, click Edit on the tronc. You can change the Name, Troncmaster and Departments. You can’t change the pay group or sharing strategy after the tronc is created.
Troncs and tronc periods can’t be deleted.
FAQs
Why are staff who’ve left still showing in the tronc?
Why are staff who’ve left still showing in the tronc?
Leavers aren’t removed from the tronc automatically. They’re left out of a period’s tips once their Employment End Date is before the period starts. They still show in Assign Tronc Points, and can show in the Unassigned tronc points warning, until you remove them from the tronc’s teams.
Leavers with no approved shifts in the period don’t get any tips, even if they still show.
Why did an employee get no tips, or the wrong amount?

They have approved shifts in one of the tronc’s teams during the period. For a daily tronc, they need to have worked that day.
Tips were entered for that day.
The tronc has been settled.
Shares are based on hours worked × tronc points, so someone who worked fewer hours gets less. If a timesheet changed after settling, unsettle the tronc and settle it again.

Is National Insurance taken off tronc payments?
Is National Insurance taken off tronc payments?
That depends on how the tronc earnings rate is set up in Workforce Payroll. By default, earnings rates have National Insurance deducted. If your tronc is run independently and NI shouldn’t be deducted, someone with payroll access can untick Employee National Insurance can be deducted and Employer National Insurance can be deducted on the tronc earnings rate.
Check with your accountant or HMRC guidance before you change this. For more detail, see Tronc Setup (UK Payroll).
