Next Insurance — Workers' Compensation Partnership

How Workforce integrates with Next Insurance to automate pay-as-you-go workers' compensation for US small businesses.

About the partnership

Workforce partners with Next Insurance as a recommended workers' compensation provider for small and mid-size US businesses. Next is a digital-first insurance agency that lets a business owner quote, bind, and manage a workers' comp policy entirely online, typically in around ten minutes.

The partnership includes a built-in data integration. After each pay run is finalised in Workforce, payroll data is automatically sent to Next so that pay-as-you-go premiums can be calculated against actual payroll — no manual exports or reconciliation required. Policy details and billing are managed through Next's portal; payroll, hours, and earnings live in Workforce.

What Next offers

Next's main offering for Workforce customers is workers' compensation insurance. They cover all states that allow private plans and write policies for over 1,300 small business types, with pricing driven by the standard inputs: industry, class codes, payroll, headcount, and location.

Next is best known for its pay-as-you-go workers' comp model. Instead of paying a large upfront deposit and reconciling at year-end audit, the policyholder pays a portion of the annual premium each pay cycle, calculated against actual payroll. Workforce is a direct integration partner with Next, so pay-as-you-go premiums are calculated automatically from each finalised pay run — no separate reporting step needed.

Note: Next Insurance is an insurance agency — policy obligations sit with the underwriting carrier on the policy, not with Workforce. Coverage questions, certificate requests, and claims are handled by Next directly through their portal or app.

How it works day to day

For a customer who carries their workers' comp through Next, the split of responsibilities looks like this:

  • In Next's portal: the customer manages their policy — quotes, coverage levels, certificates of insurance, billing details, and claims.

  • In Workforce: the customer runs payroll as normal. After each pay run is finalised, Workforce automatically sends payroll figures — including hours, earnings, and class codes by employee — to Next so the period's premium can be calculated and billed.

  • Between the two: the integration handles the data transfer. There is nothing extra for the customer to do each pay cycle.

If a pay run is later voided or amended in Workforce, the updated figures are automatically sent to Next so the premium for that period can be recalculated.

Getting set up with Next

To get started, go to Next directly to get a quote and bind a policy. Once your policy is in place, connect it to Workforce by entering your Next policy number in Settings → Integrations → Next Insurance. Workforce will begin sending payroll data to Next automatically from your next pay run.
